This morning, I found that my SIX year old daughter had drawn something (with blue pen) on the back seat of my husband’s new truck. Needless to say, he’s not happy. I have been looking up ways to get pen off of upholstery. I came across all kinds of creative uses for everyday items for!
Creative Uses For Everyday Items
Lemons
- Sanitize chopping block (I’ve done this!)
- Keep fruit from browning (Do this all the time!)
- Use in vases or jars to decorate (love this! cute for centerpieces)
- whiten fingernails (really? Gonna try it.)
Olive Oil
- Shave- closer shave than shaving cream (I’m going to try it!)
- makeup remover (works great!)
- moisturize cuticles (yes it does!)
- dust furniture/polish- can also use mineral oil (tried it, looks great!)
- squeaky hinges (or WD-40?)
Dryer Sheets
- Dust blinds (might try this one day)
- Remove static (yes!)
- Clean pet hair (No pets here)
- Freshen smelly shoes (I have boys- definitely noted)
Alka Seltzer or Coke
Use this to clean your toilet. It may seem like a strange solution, but let it sit in the toilet for a little bit and then it’ll help get your toilet back to clean and sparkling!
Coffee Filters
These can be used as snack holders or appetizer trays. This is especially useful for your kids in the car if they tend to make messes (which all kids do).
Pants hanger
Pant hangers can be used to keep your recipe book open (hanging on cabinet). It may look a bit silly, but when you’re juggling spices, measuring cups, and other cooking materials, this will definitely come in handy.
White bread
White bread removes grease fingerprints from walls. Just press (and rub, if needed) on the grease stains and they should come out. Do this as soon as possible so the grease doesn’t set it.
Sponges
These soaked in water and frozen can be used as ice packs. They’re reusable and they don’t leave a drippy mess as they thaw out.
Colored rubber bands
Use these to wrap presents instead of ribbon to give modern look. They’re actually a lot easier to use than ribbon an still look great.
Hair dryer
Use a hair dryer to de-wrinkle tablecloths or curtains. It may take a little time, but it’s a lot more financially efficient than taking them to a dry cleaners or doing something else with them.

You can also use a hair dryer to to set frosting (cold shot) and give a glossy and bright finish, use hot air.
Wine rack
Instead of buying a whole organizational set for your craft room, just use a wine rack to organize your spray paint. You can use this to organize any of your art supplies that fit in it, really.
Makeup brushes
These aren’t just for putting on makeup! Use one of these brushes to clean your keyboard off! It’s great for keeping the keys clean and also getting any gunk of the cracks.
Old magazines or newspaper
Old magazines and newspapers are great for wrapping presents. They give a nice, old-timey feel to your presents and you don’t have to spend any extra money on wrapping paper!
Vinegar
Use vinegar to clean and do laundry. Vinegar actually has some really powerful cleansing agents, so it’s great for around the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and anywhere else!

Hair spray gets ink out
Not sure if it will work but my daughter’s got permanent marker on fabric and vegetable oil & baking soda 1:1 got it out and I also used dawn dish soap to wash it up. Like it was never there!
oxi clean works better then anything I’ve ever used to remove anything!
I have had good experiences with Oxi Clean too, but usually doing laundry. Do they have an upholstery product or do you just use the laundry product? Great idea, thank you!
Hairspray – every teacher’s magic solution for getting ink stains off their clothing. Use the aerosol kind then blot with clear water and a soft cloth (like and old T-shirt or diaper) to rinse.
i was always told anything alcohol-based or naptha gets out ink. We have used rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid, and hair spray successfully for years.
Solely invested in a different netbook, unsure no matter if there’s an easy solution to have chrome social book marks with out of date netbook that will innovative netbook… Many thanks..
