Household Uses for Coffee Grounds

A lot of you may already know that coffee grounds are fantastic in your garden. They make an effective, natural fertilizer. You should also toss them into your compost bin to add extra nitrogen. To use them as fertilizer, just use a pitch fork to work them into the soil around your vegetable plants. As an added bonus, some people believe that grounds in the soil repel slugs and snails.

If you do throw out some of your used grounds, make them the first thing at the bottom of a new trash bag. They help cut down the odor in your trash significantly. If a stinky freezer is ever a problem, you can also solve that. Just put some dry coffee into a clean sock and place it in the freezer. It will absorb the odor and leave your freezer smelling much better.

Use wet grounds to disguise and minimize the look of scratches on your dark wood furniture. Just use a Q-tip to work damp grounds into the scratch. Leave it to work a little magic for about 10 minutes, then buff dry. Reapply as needed to achieve the right tone.

Unique Uses for Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are a great natural dye for fabrics, paper, and even Easter eggs. Make a slurry with the grounds plus a little water, then suspend a hard-cooked egg into it. The longer you leave it, the darker the color. The lovely chocolate-colored eggs in this picture were dyed with coffee!
