DIY Canvas Projects

Before you can do any of these projects,  grab a canvas {or two} and some basic craft supplies from Michaels. Here are some ideas to inspire your creativity.

1. Glue 3-D wood letters onto your canvas, or cut out your favorite quote with a Cricut machine. Feel free to experiment with colors and fonts.

2. Use multiple canvases to create one image. Purchase a three-pack of canvases, lay them together to paint one image over all three. When you hang it, hang them separately so your image is divided into thirds. It looks really cool!

3. Splatter paint on your canvas. This is simple DIY art at it’s best, and kids love this idea too. Just use your hands or a paintbrush to splatter different paint colors all over the canvas. The more abstract it looks, the better!

4. Cut out images from your favorite magazines. Use Mod Podge to adhere them over the surface of the canvas in a collage. Teens love to do this!

5. If you’ve always wanted to paint a canvas the old-fashioned way, now’s the time to try it. You can find any number of painting tutorials to watch on YouTube. This is a fun afternoon activity!

6. This is a classic art project in which the process is more fun than the result! Tape paint-filled balloons to a canvas. Throw a few darts to pop the balloons. Let the paint splatter wherever it goes and see how it turns out. Make sure to do this one outside!

7. Cover a canvas in contact paper or a favorite fabric. Wrap it with twine, and use it to display sentimental items or photos.

8. Try a unique button design on canvas. (Inspired by this Etsy shop). There are so many designs you could make by gluing buttons on a canvas!

9. Think outside the paint—cover a canvas in yarn! Just wrap different colors of yarn, or some color-variegated yarn around the canvas in geometric designs. I love the eclectic look of this.

10. Cover your canvas in painter’s tape before you paint it for an easy geometric print. You can also do random lines or any design that inspires you. It really looks awesome when you pull the tape off.

I’m sure you can use watercolor paper. Next put them in frames and hang them.

I like your splatter paint canvas and plan to practice. Somehow I’m thinking if a painter’s skill seems to be needed.
